Joe Hamakke, has been a photographer and writer at Thrasher for many years.
Every skateboarder to have encountered Joe had the same thing to say: that he is "one of the nicest dudes you could ever meet".

Joe was sadly diagnosed with esophageal cancer a little over a week ago. He had just concluded his first session of chemotherapy when shortly after, he suffered a massive heart attack which was likely linked to the cancer treatment. Joe was then taken to ICU where he was in a coma fighting for his life and today, we've been given the sad news that he has unfortunately passed away.
Joe was renowned for always supporting skaters and the community over the years. He was always forthcoming with his time and considered both a mentor and father like figure to many young up and coming skaters to whom he would pass on his encyclopedic knowledge of skating, all the while cracking constant jokes and taking runs. He has also shot some legendary photos over the years.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his young family. If you are able to, please kindly donate via the link below to support Joe's family through this difficult time.
